The Metrological Electron Accelerator Facility MELAF of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt PTB (Braunschweig, Germany) offers access to well characterized high-energy (0.5 MeV – 50 MeV) electron and photon radiation fields in the energy range from 0.5 to 50 MeV for material testing (e.g. radiation-sensitive electronics). As a partner organisation, access to MELAF is provided free of charge, but ARIES will not provide travel or subsistence support.

Features

Research LINAC
  • Adjustable energy 0.5 to 50 MeV (electrons or photons), traceable measured u < 0.2 %
  • Charge pulse resolved measured, traceable measured u < 0.1 %
  • Dose rates up to 100 Gy/min, traceable measured u < 1 %
Medical LINACs
  • Electron energies: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22 MeV, photon energies: 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 25 MV
  • Dose rates 0.1 to 5 Gy/min, traceable measured u < 0.6 %
  • Rotatable gantry + multi leave collimator (field size 0.5 cm2 to 40 cm2)
Co-60 source
  • 132 TBq @ 3/2017, 3 Gy/min – 0.03 Gy/min (0.5 m to 5 m distance)

Support offered

PTB staff will operate the facility and will provide assistance to users in experiment planning, implementation in addition to scientific and technical support during and after the test campaign. Users will be able to access the control room, and will be provided logistics support as needed. Expertise and sophisticated measuring instruments are available onsite for online measurement and post-irradiation analysis.

Access to MELAF is free-of-charge for scientific research. ARIES will not fund the travel and subsistence of users visiting MELAF. The formal application process is not necessary.

Contact

Interested users are encouraged to contact the Facility Coordinator in order to discuss the feasibility of the planned project and to reserve beam time.
